Hot Weather Pushes Up June Cooling Costs Nearly 76 Percent; Dominion Virginia Power Offers Energy-Saving Tips

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010
  • Bills will rise with higher usage despite slightly lower fuel rate
  • Company urges consumers to take steps to save energy, money
  • June 2010 hottest on record for Richmond since 1943

RICHMOND, Va., July 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — With the hottest June on record causing Virginia homeowners to use as much as 76 percent more energy for cooling than in an average June, Dominion Virginia Power is encouraging customers to take steps to save energy and money.

The impact of hot weather on June bills could seem magnified because bills in April and May reflected mild weather as well as rebates from a rate settlement agreement. Dominion Virginia Power’s fuel rate went down slightly July 1 but that will not affect previous bills. For rate information: www.dom.com/varates.

“Outdoor temperatures drive home energy usage more than any other single factor,” said Ken Barker, vice president of customer solutions and energy conservation.  ”The extremely hot weather in recent weeks is sending just about everyone’s energy bills higher, but there are steps you can take to control your energy use.” View Dominion’s video on tips for saving energy in the summer at: www.dom.com/about/conservation/summer-tips.jsp.

Some of the lowest-cost, most effective measures include:

  • Raising the thermostat setting to 78 degrees to recognize savings of 1 percent or more on the monthly electric bill for each increase of one degree.
  • Changing the direction of a ceiling fan so that the air blows downward in the summer.  A ceiling fan uses less power than air conditioning and increases comfort, particularly when used in conjunction with raising the thermostat.  It can make the room feel 10 degrees cooler.
  • Closing drapes during the hottest times of the day to block heat from entering the home. Sunny windows account for a significant amount of unwanted heat and make air conditioners work much harder.
  • Scheduling activities that require hot water — such as washing dishes or clothes — for the early morning or late evening. This will result in less heat and humidity being added to your home.

More tips and videos on conserving energy are available on-line at:  www.dom.com/about/conservation/index.jsp.

Weather impact on cooling needs

Summer temperatures in Virginia thus far have been significantly higher than normal.  As a result, the amount of energy needed to cool a typical single-family home also has increased significantly. Compared with last year, cooling energy needs for June 2010 increased by the following amounts compared with an average June:

  • Northern Virginia: 55 percent;
  • Richmond: 76 percent; and
  • Hampton Roads area: 53 percent.

Many other uses of electricity — such as lighting, cooking, washing and drying clothes, and computers — are not affected by the weather.

At Marshall Mechanical, we are also concerned about your home’s energy costs. That’s why we specialize in geothermal heat pumps and solar-ready air conditioning units and solar heat pumps.  Simply call us today at 804.323.0189 – we can show you how you can reduce your energy bills by up to 70%.  Even something as simple as a programmable thermostat can help you manage energy costs effectively.

VIDEO: Summer Energy Saving Tips from Dominion Power

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Many Richmond VA homeowners are looking for low-cost home improvements that can make a difference in your home energy bills.

Dominion Virginia Power has a number of suggestions to manage your Richmond home’s energy costs with a new video featuring Bob Fulton, Dominion’s weatherization specialist, who demonstrates how to include a number of energy saving initiatives, such as:

  • Adding the proper amount of attic insulation and having the proper attic ventilation
  • Saving money with a programmable thermostat
  • Using power strips to save money
  • Determining the best time of day to use your dishwasher and other appliances
  • Using a microwave oven or, better yet, an outdoor grill for cooking and why it makes sense in the summer

This is a short video, with great tips.  Marshall Mechanical suggests having your heating and air conditioning unit checked twice a year (Spring and Fall) rather than every three years as Bob indicates.  Every three years would be the minimum but to maintain your equipment in good working order and have the HVAC units last longer for you, we suggest two times a year.

Many of our clients have annual maintenance contracts and that prevents problems from happening in the first place.

Also, be sure to change your air conditioning filter once a month or once every three months, depending on the type of filter you’re using.  Some don’t have to be replaced but need to be cleaned or vacuumed regularly.

If you have any questions specific to home energy savings particularly with your home’s heating and air conditioning units, or you want to know how to save up to 70% with a geothermal heat pump, simply call our office at 804.323.0189.  You’ll learn how to save money each and every month with a simple and free home energy analysis.

The Marshall Stimulus Plan: Full HVAC Maintenance Service for as low as $79

Monday, March 8th, 2010

If your home’s HVAC system is less than 10 years old, it’s best to change your air filter every 90 days and to have your system serviced at once a year.

We tend to remember to have our car’s oil changed every 3,000 miles, but often we don’t take the same maintenance care on our home’s heating and cooling system.

A dirty heat pump or cooling coils means you’re losing money every time the system runs.  And it adds up to a lot of cash each year if you don’t call experienced HVAC technicians for proper maintenance.

At Marshall Mechanical, we have the team to maximize your system and get the most out of every dollar you spend on gas or electricity every month.

For a limited time, we will tune-up, service and inspect up to two HVAC systems in your home for just $99! *

This offer is on a first-come, first-served basis.  We will perform this service on your schedule any day between 7AM – 5PM.  And, yes, we mean Saturday or  Sunday at no additional cost.

Want an even better deal?

You can save even more by simply finding a friend, neighbor or family member within 5 minutes drive of your home and we’ll perform the same great service for ONLY $79 each. You both save an additional twenty bucks. This is a limited-time offer and will end soon so book your appointments today.

Call Jennifer right now at 804-323-0189 or send her an email today at  info@marshallmechanical.com.

*Includes only heat pumps or gas furnaces with air conditioning.  All other system types are subject to additional charges. Filters are not included.

Silent killer Carbon Monoxide poisoning risks increase – be safe with 25% off complete CO Detection Service

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Freezing temperatures have plagued the Greater Richmond area for more than 10 days now and heating systems across the Commonwealth are running on high.  That has fire crews and heating experts worried about malfunctions that could be deadly.

Marshall Mechanical’s HVAC technician Gary Dedrick and owner Sean Cantrell appeared on an NBC12 news segment Sunday on the increased threat of carbon monoxide poisoning during the cold Richmond temperatures and what consumers should watch out for.

Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, tasteless gas and is highly poisonous.

“Most people don’t even know,” said HVAC technician Gary Dedrick. “They’ll get home after a hard day’s work. They’ll be sitting on their couch, enjoying a little time with their family. They’re feeling tired. They think it’s from the day’s work and it’s not.”

It doesn’t matter what type of system you use to keep your house warm in these chilly temperatures.

To avoid a carbon monoxide leak:

“Don’t ignore your heating systems or your gas-powered appliances,” said HVAC technician Sean Cantrell. “Have them checked out at least once a year.”

In order to help you protect you and your family – and your home – during the cold winter season, Marshall Mechanical is offering a 25% savings of a home carbon monoxide test service and detector.

Normally, this service – along with the detector – is $160 but for a limited time you can save 25%.  So for just $120 – a savings of $40 — you can make sure your home is safe all winter long.

Simply mention the NBC12 video when you call 804.323.0189 for your appointment and we’ll quickly set up a time convenient for you to test your home’s carbon monoxide levels and install your CO detector.

A simple call to make sure you and your family are protected from carbon monoxide, often called the silent killer because the gas is invisible, odorless and tasteless yet highly poisonous. Don’t delay – call Marshall Mechanical today at 323.0189 for your appointment and 25% discount. Remember to mention NBC12 when you call.

15 Best Tips for Winterizing your Home Right Now

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

In Richmond, the weather keeps changing – it’s warm, it’s cold, it’s warm again – but soon the cold days will be upon us for good. Save money this winter and help the environment by winterizing your home. It’s easy to do, and you’d be surprised how these simple steps can make a big difference in your utility bill, and your comfort level.

  1. Get your furnace inspected. Furnaces should be cleaned and tuned by a professional annually. It’s not an expensive service, and it will keep your furnace running efficiently and safely.
  2. Check your home for air leaks.  Especially around doors and windows.  Adding weather stripping and insulation is one of the easiest things you can do.   Add weather stripping around doors and caulk or foam around gaps in windows to help keep the warm air inside.  You can also add a door sweep to exterior doors.
  3. Insulate your attic and crawl spaces.  A little extra insulation in your home’s attic or crawl space can save you a lot of money in heating bills.   You need 11 to 12 inches of insulation in your attic. Since ceiling joists are about that high, you know you need to add more insulation if you can see the ceiling joists.
  4. Get your duct work checked. A home with central heat can lose up to 60% of its heated air before that air reaches the vents if ductwork is not well-connected and insulated. That’s a huge waste of money. Your professional HVAC contractor can ensure your ductwork is properly in place and well insulated.
  5. Cover windows with bubble wrap. It’s not just for gift boxes. Plastic wrap works too, but bubble wrap offers better insulation especially if windows are old and not thermo-insulated.
  6. Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans. This pushes hot air down and re-circulates it through the house.
  7. Move furniture off your vents.  How easy is that?!
  8. Wrap your pipes. As a plumbing contractor, we’re used to leaks. And we want to make sure you don’t have them. If you’re worried about your pipes freezing and bursting, wrap pipes in areas that are not heated with pre-molded foam rubber sleeves or fiberglass insulation.  Wrapping the pipes leading into and out of your home can help prevent water damage and flooding too, especially in basement or crawl space areas.
  9. Take the hoses off the spigots.  Water expands as it freezes, and any water that’s trapped in pipes has the potential to split them as it cools.  Store your hoses in the garage for the Winter.
  10. Clean the chimney.  Before starting that fireplace, make sure the chimney is clean, and your smoke detectors are working and have fresh batteries.  And everyone in the family should know where your fire extinquisher is and how to properly use it.
  11. Shut the door. Have guest or other rooms you don’t use? Close the vents in those rooms and shut the doors.
  12. Clean the gutters.  Avoiding water overflows especially in icy or snowy conditions.  By November, most of the leaves have fallen from the trees in Richmond although those oak trees sometimes hang around until Spring.  Just keep an eye on the gutters and be sure they’re clear of leaves, tree limbs and other debris especially when experiencing windy conditions.
  13. Invest in a computerized, programmable thermostat. Program your heating system exactly the way you want it,  so that your house isn’t heating when nobody is at home.
  14. Get your irrigation system turned off and inspected by a certified professional.  Virginia State Law requires that you have your backflow valve inspected every year, because faulty valves can cause dirt in your irrigation system to get sucked back into the water supply of your house.
  15. Make your garage a usable space for Winter projects.  Check out our blog post about installing a heater for garages or utility spaces so you can complete woodworking or other DIY projects throughout the year.

Remembering these important home winterization tips each year before Winter starts will help you prepare your home to be warm, energy efficient, and safe – even if the weather outside turns frightful.

At Marshall Mechanical, we’re here to help you get your residence ready for the colder weather so if you need your heating system, furnace or duct work inspected, programmable thermostat or garage heater installed, or your lawn irrigation system certified and winterized, simply call us at 804.323.0189.  We’ll get your home ready for the cold, even if you’re not.

P.S. Don’t forget to share these great tips with friends, family and co-workers.  We’re sure they would appreciate the energy efficiency and safety reminders.

Why homeowners today are replacing their oil boilers with high-efficiency gas boilers. Does it make sense for you, too?

Monday, November 9th, 2009

We’ve been getting a lot of calls recently from homeowners who are interested in replacing their boilers and we’re answering questions specifically about the differences between using a fuel oil boiler versus natural / propane gas boiler.  So we thought we’d share some general information about today’s boilers and the differences between them in order to help you make the right decision for your home and budget.

With some exceptions, gas boilers – which can be run with natural gas or propane – are generally more energy efficient, cleaner burning, quieter, less expensive and qualify for both Federal tax credits and VA state tax rebates.  Simply stated, those are the reasons most homeowners are switching to gas boilers – higher efficiency and better economically.  But homeowners should be careful in switching to gas as not all gas boilers carry the same AFUE or high efficiency rating – we only recommend those that are 95% AFUE.  Call us at 804.323.0189 for answers to any other questions you may have.

 Q.  Are fuel oil boilers energy efficient?

 A.  The general answer is no.  Most oil boilers run in the low 80 percent of energy efficiency and most homeowners want systems that run higher, as you should.  However, Marshall Mechanical is the only HVAC contractor in the Richmond area that is authorized to both purchase and install the Buderus GB125BE/35 High Efficiency Oil Fired Hot Water Cast Iron Boiler which runs at 91% efficiency or AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency).  This system is not affordable for all homeowners but if you want to replace your oil system with another oil system, then this high-efficiency unit should be considered because of its far superiority and energy efficiency as compared to other oil boilers.  For various reasons – expense and efficiency the most common —  many homeowners who currently have oil boilers are switching to gas boilers.

 Q.  Are all gas boilers energy efficient?

 A.  No, not all gas boilers carry high efficiency ratings or AFUE.  We often see other HVAC contractors recommend 80% AFUE gas boilers as they are easy to install and lower price point for consumers. In reality, they are not a good investment for consumers because they don’t qualify for tax credits and they cost more each month in utility bills.  Therefore, they are not cheaper in the long run.  A homeowner can purchase a high efficiency unit and pay the same net investment as a low efficiency boiler but then continue to save about 15% each month over a lower efficiency

Boderus GB-142 is 95% AFUE High Efficiency boiler

Boderus GB-142 is 95% AFUE High Efficiency boiler

model which makes much more sense.  We recommend high efficiency natural gas or propane (LP) boilers such as the Buderus Ultra-Efficient 94%+ AFUE GB142 which is also whisper quiet, Utica 95% AFUE Modulating Condenser UB95M boilers and the  Triangle Tube PE110, a 95% AFUE Condensing Stainless Steel Wall Mounted Gas Boiler with a built-in “Tank-in-Tank” Indirect Fired Water Heater.

 Q. Do oil boilers qualify for Energy Efficiency Federal Tax Credits?  What about Virginia State Energy Efficiency Rebates?  Do gas boilers qualify?

 A.  The only oil boiler that is energy efficient enough to qualify for Federal Tax Credits and Virginia State Rebates is the one we mentioned, the Buderus GB125BE/35 because it runs as a 91%+ efficient oil boiler.  Other oil boilers do not qualify for tax credits and rebates.  But the natural gas boilers we mentioned above like the Boderus GB-142 run at 95% efficiency and therefore DO qualify for both Federal tax credits and Virginia State rebates.  The bottom line is that a boiler has to be above 90% AFUE in order to qualify for either Federal Tax Credits or Virginia State Rebates.

 Q.  How much are the tax credits and rebates?

 A.  Federal tax credits for energy efficiency are now running at up to $1500.  Virginia state rebates are up to $2000.  Combined, these tax credits as a result of President Obama’s stimulus plan, benefit the homeowner by offering up to $3,500 in tax credits and rebates.  This allows the homeowner to purchase high-efficiency units for a much lower net cost than ever before.  It is yet another reason (and a very important one to most homeowners in this economy) to replace your oil boiler with one that runs at over 90% AFUE.  Many of the gas products we mentioned like the Boderus GB142, the Utica UB95M series or the Triangle Tube PE110 run at 95% AFUE and are considered high efficiency which is why it makes more sense to purchase.

 Q.  What about maintenance costs?  Are oil boilers expensive to maintain?  How do they compare to natural gas?

 A. Maintenance costs are traditionally higher with oil boilers.  Aside from being less efficient, oil tends to be a dirty fuel and therefore oil boilers (and furnaces) absolutely require annual maintenance.  The cost of not maintaining an oil appliance can be upwards of $2,000 just to clean a boiler and get it up and running if it has been neglected for a just a year or two.   Natural gas boilers should be inspected annually in order to maintain energy efficiency but maintenance costs are minimal in comparison.

 Q. Are there any environmental issues for a homeowner to be concerned with?

 A.  Oil boilers require an oil storage tank.  Many homeowners do not like the environmental issues that arise as a result of maintaining their storage tanks and therefore opt for a natural gas boiler instead for that very reason.  Natural gas is clean burning at 95% efficiency.  The only environmentally-conscious oil boiler we recommend is the Boderus GB125BE/35 but gas boilers — natural gas in particular — should be considered if you are concerned about the environment both in and around your home.

 Q.  What is the cost factor involved in comparing an oil boiler to a gas boiler?

 A.  Aside from the fact that an oil boiler is more expensive to maintain each year, natural gas is currently costing home owners significantly less than fuel oil on a monthly basis.  We find that homeowners are weighing this factor heavily when considering their monthly utility bills and calculating cost savings.  We can help a homeowner run calculations and savings for their individual situation based on various units so they can do their own cost calculation.

 Q.  Our oil boiler seems to always make noise.  We get used to it but we’re wondering if there are other options that would help us with noise reduction?

 A.  Yes, most oil boilers will be noisy when the unit heats up — you’ll always know its running because you’ll hear it.  Gas boilers, however, run quieter – probably quieter than your refrigerator.  Significant noise reduction is another reason why homeowners who have oil boilers have switched to gas boiler systems.

 Q.  Are there installation differences between oil and gas boilers?

 A. High efficiency boilers must be piped differently than lower efficiency boilers.  Most high efficiency boilers require a primary/secondary loop.  Utica is the only manufacture that doesn’t require a primary/secondary loop and that’s why we often recommend the 95% efficiency, UB95M-200 gas-fired, condensing, hot water boiler depending on your home’s situation.

 Q.  Do you have a recommendation on where I can get basic information about how boilers work?

 A.  We think this consumer brochure from Boderus is the most helpful.  Click here.

 Q.  What if I want to get an estimate and comparison of replacing my oil boiler?

 A.  The experts at Marshall Mechanical – your Richmond area HVAC contractor and partner – are always available to answer any further questions you may have, visit your home at a time convenient for you and to give you an accurate estimate of energy efficiency, product and installation cost.  Simply call us at 804.323.0189 today.

As you probably know, the stimulus plan has provided for Federal tax credits on energy-efficient products. This means that homeowners can qualify for tax credits in addition to the Lennox rebate program. In addition to either the up to $1,200 in rebates OR the 12-months zero percent financing options, you can also receive Federal Tax Credits of up to $1,500, for all qualifying HVAC equipment installed in 2009 and 2010 in existing homes.

So if you replace your HVAC system with a Lennox Comfort System before September 27th, you can be eligible to receive:

  1. Up to $1,200 in Lennox product rebates OR 12-months same-as-cash financing, AND
  2. Up to $1,500 in Federal Tax Rebates.

Which gives you a total savings of up to $2,700!  Early bird offer expires September 27th!

And what’s more is that you continue to save on your heating and air conditioning bills each and every month with a new, more energy-efficient HVAC system that will provide you with comfort all year long.  We can show you how much you’d save compared to your current system with a simple savings calculator.
